THE REFS
Project Type:
Feature Film (Sports Comedy)

THE TONE
Tone is irreverent, fast-paced, and character-driven, in the vein of Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball, and Old School.
The film follows a former professional football star whose career is ended by injuries. Unable to leave the game, he becomes a referee, following in the footsteps of his late father. He is assigned to his father’s old outlaw officiating crew— a band of aging, foul mouthed experts exiled by league politics who are still elite on the field but have been pushed aside to lower-profile games by league politics.

As the season unfolds, the crew must battle declining standards, bureaucratic sabotage, public outrage over blown calls, and the interference of the Officiating Administration—led by the protagonist’s father’s former adversary—who will do anything to keep them from succeeding. As officiating chaos erupts league-wide, the most hated men on the field must save the game they love without ever being loved back. This is not sentimental or inspirational sports drama. It is a rowdy underdog comedy with heart underneath the chaos.
The story focus is on:
-
Classic three-act structure

-
A final confrontation where competence and experience defeat politics and sabotage
